Moving a static caravan.

Moving a static caravan is a job for a specialist haulier, and the transport is often the smaller problem. The hard part is finding a park that will take it. Sort that first.

Before you book anything

1. Get the new park's agreement in writing. Many parks refuse caravans from elsewhere, or only accept ones under a certain age.
2. Check the new park's site fee and age limit. Moving a ten year old caravan to a park with a fifteen year limit buys you five years. See how long static caravans last.
3. Read your current agreement. Look for disconnection fees, notice periods and any rule about who can remove the caravan.
4. Compare with selling. Sometimes selling and buying on the new park works out better. See what your caravan is worth.

What goes into the cost

• Haulage: a low loader, priced mainly on distance and the size of the unit.
• Lifting and positioning: a crane or tractor at one or both ends, depending on access.
• Abnormal load rules: wider units may need escort vehicles and set travel times.
• Disconnection and reconnection: water, drainage, gas and electrics, by qualified people.
• Park charges: some parks charge a fee when a caravan leaves.
• Setting up: levelling, skirting and any steps or decking at the new pitch.
